MEMORIES I

My first memory is being four

Standing alone on a hard mud floor

On looking down I’m clearly a boy

I hear laughing it fills me with joy

Time has moved on I’m out in a field

Under the sun I’m a man revealed

Clothes left behind it’s too hot you see

A tradition for farmers like me

With harvest in to market we go

So simply dressed our status on show

Selling our grain and beaming with pride

Loving this life with nothing to hide

The clamour is stilled and people hush

Into the packed throng palace guards rush

Followed shortly by a noble man

In silence his shadowed eyes they scan

Just for a moment he stares at me

Before marching on leaving me be

Oh why did he look at me like that?

Like I’m the mouse to his hungry cat

Winding the clock on a year or two

No more working the fields in a crew

For I’ve been taught how to read and write

Proudly wearing a kilt of pure white

But here I stop for I lost my way

To be continued another day

My meditation’s stopped by my cat

Who’s jumped on my lap purring she sat.
